Wilson welcomes improvement in employment numbers

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has welcomed the reduction in the number of people receiving job seekers allowance.

The DUP MP was commenting following the release of figures broken down by constituency. They show that the number of people receiving job seekers allowance in East Antrim fell from 2321 in March to 2235 in April.

Sammy Wilson said:

“These figures are encouraging. They show that between March and April, there was a fall of 86 in the number of people receiving job seekers allowance. This is positive and welcome news. It shows that there has been an improvement in the economy in East Antrim, and it will no doubt be especially welcomed by those who have found work.

As the local MP, I am pleased that despite a national unemployment rate of 7.7%, in East Antrim it is only 5.3%. Of the 18 constituencies in Northern Ireland, only 3 have a lower unemployment rate that East Antrim. This is a positive news story for our constituency, and I look forward to seeing these figures improve again next month.

As we look ahead and try to improve our local economy and make it strong again for the future, I will continue to work hard and use my role as MP and as Finance Minister to ensure that we protect existing jobs in the constituency and create opportunities for further growth and new jobs. “
