Wilson: Time to say goodbye to EU

Sammy Wilson has said that it is time for the UK to leave the European Union.

Mr Wilson said:

“Yesterday a Sun/YouGov poll shows that 48% of people want the UK to leave the EU while only 35% want to remain. As a member of the Better off Out campaign group, I am pleased that yet another poll shows strong public support for withdrawal from a political union that costs us vast amounts of money, subjects us to mad rulings from EU court decisions, and places a massive regulatory burden on industry. And of course the people of the UK never voted to join the EU. Although through a referendum we gave our support to continued membership of the EEC, we have never been asked our opinion on membership of the political union that we are now a part of and subject to.

I am glad that most people in the country take the same opinion as I do on this issue, but sadly I do not believe that the House of Commons reflects the will of the people in regards to EU membership.

Earlier this year there was a referendum on changing the voting system for election to the House of Commons. This was a referendum that nobody wanted. However up and down the country people have a clear desire to have their say on EU membership. Yet the political classes are in denial about public opinion. We don’t want further political, military, economic and social union with Europe. What we do want is a proper trading agreement. It’s time for a referendum so that the people can decide, and I have confidence that they will vote to leave, so that we can regain our sovereignty and independence. How many more polls with it take for those in Westminster to realise that this is what the people want?”
