Local business welcomes small business rates relief

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has said that the Executive has delivered real help for people during tough economic times through a variety of measures over which it has control.

He said that the small business rates relief is another way in which the Executive has tried to help businesses and keep more people employed.

Sammy Wilson said:

“I am delighted that as Minister of Finance I was able to extend the small business rates relief scheme so that now a further 8,300 businesses will automatically receive relief, which will on average save them £400 a year.

Since the scheme was introduced over 24 000 properties across Northern Ireland have benefited from rates relief. In Carrickfergus, the figure has been 397 properties, in Larne it is 537 and in Newtownabbey 774 properties have benefited. This is real help for business.

Local businessman Jackie McIlwaine said:

“There is little doubt that we are living in difficult times. I welcome this rates relief scheme which will provide much needed help for businesses like mine here in Larne and across the country. I am pleased that the Executive understand the need for action to be taken and that they recognise the environment in which we are operating.”
