Sainsbury's Parliamentary Waste Day

Dear Mr Wilson,

Thank you for taking time out of your day to learn about Sainsbury’s Waste Less, Save More initiative at our drop-in event yesterday. It was great to see so many people interested in such an important issue and supporting our plans for rolling out food waste saving ideas nationally from 2017.

As you will be aware, food waste is one of our top priorities and we are investing £10m over five years to find solutions to reduce it, including £1 million this year in the town of Swadlincote to trial new technology and community initiatives in a bid to cut household food waste in the town by 50%. With the average family in the UK throwing away £700 of avoidable food waste each year, this would represent a significant saving of £350 per household.

Many of you will have spoken to Sainsbury’s colleagues involved, as well as representatives from Winnow, Hubbub and WRAP who helped us launch the innovative initiatives being trialled in Swadlincote. We hope you enjoyed listening to the learnings from the trial and experiencing some of the innovations being used.

We are now moving towards sharing the learnings from Swadlincote nationally, and last week announced a further £1m of funding for ‘Discovery Communities’ across the UK that want to be the next areas to trial food waste-saving initiatives. Sainsbury’s will also provide these communities with detailed guidance to enable them to replicate the work in Swadlincote with a range of free or low-investment solutions – from community events and schools programmes, through to the introduction of new technology in households. Communities will be able to pick and choose their options, and can apply for top-up funding to put these in place. All funding applications will open in the New Year. Those with additional ideas can also pitch concepts to the Waste less, Save more ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panel which will approve additional funding for outstanding concepts. 110 towns and cities have already signed up to be Discovery Communities. To involve your local community, please email wasteless@sainsburys.co.uk. Finally, we would be delighted if you would support this initiative by joining the conversation at #WasteLessSaveMore

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions at all about Sainsbury’s current activity, or want to find out more about our Waste Less, Save More work. As requested, please find photos of you at our event attached.

Yours sincerely,

Damien Drumm
