Time to cut down on quangos, says Wilson

Following the announcement that the head of the Human Rights Commission is to stand down, Sammy Wilson has questioned the reason for the existence of the organisation. Commenting Mr. Wilson said:

“The news that Monica McWilliams is to step down will have reminded people that the Human Right Commission exists. I am sure that the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland have little idea what it does, and if they did they would have little reason to support its continued existence.

Wilson presses Roads Service on winter gritting

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has been lobbying the Roads Service to ensure that when winter comes, roads in and around Ballycarry and Magheramorne will be properly gritted.

The MP said:

“Although I am aware that it is summer and that there are few problems with ice and snow on our roads at this time of year, there is no point in waiting until winter to raise this issue with the Roads Service. I have been in contact with them about this throughout the year. It is of paramount importance that they understand how dangerous the roads can get during icy and snowy conditions, and that these roads are used by many different people and groups as there are churches and orange halls on these roads, but most importantly many children and school buses use these roads in and around Ballycarry and Magheramorne.

Newsletter Column – 16th August 2010

It is difficult to know what Martin McGuinness was at when he revealed that the British and Irish governments were talking to dissident republicans. Was he simply stating a fact with no ulterior motive, was he trying to cause disquiet among unionists or was he seeking to sow seeds of doubt amongst the dissident foot soldiers that their leadership is starting off in the same direction as the IRA did and that the road they are going on will result in the same surrender and sellout that they criticise Sinn Fein and the IRA for.

Newsletter Column – 9th August 2010

As I lay in bed listening to the wireless early on Friday morning, John Humphries commented that 6th Aug was the 65th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, an event which brought the war in the Pacific to an abrupt end and ushered in the nuclear age. This one bomb vaporised a whole city larger than Belfast and instantly killed 70,000 people with many more dying from radiation in the months and years afterwards. It was deemed to be essential to saving hundreds of thousands of allied lives given the fanatical resistance from the Japanese as the allies closed in on their country. In the battle for the small island of Okinawa of the coast of Japan the Americans had lost 12,000 soldiers in a three month battle in which 110,000 Japanese soldiers had also died. The fear was that the casualties from an invasion of Japan itself would have been many times worse so a decision was made to bomb the Japanese government into submission with a weapon of awesome power.

Nuclear must be part of energy mix, says Wilson

Sammy Wilson MP has welcomed the admission by the Energy Secretary Chris Huhne that nuclear power will have to be part of the UK’s energy mix and that nuclear power stations will be ‘part of the future’.

Mr Wilson said:

“I welcome the fact that the Secretary of State has finally come to the realisation that nuclear power is and will need to be an absolutely vital part of our energy mix.

Wilson disappointed by Equitable Life payouts

Sammy Wilson has expressed his disappointment on the lack of action for the payout of compensation for Equitable Life policyholders.

The East Antrim MP said:

“I am disappointed that after 10 years, there has still been no payout to Equitable Life policyholders and I am at a loss at to why the Government has failed to reject the report of Sir John Chadwick. It is clearly unfair and would contradict the statements made by the Government when it said that it was committed to implementing the recommendations of the Parliamentary Ombudsman.

Wilson: Appalling waste of resources by Northern Trust

Sammy Wilson has lambasted the Northern Health and Social care Trust for wasting Northern Trust resources by holding ‘happy and content’ sessions with a Buddhist monk.

The sessions will be run by the ‘Health Improvement and Community Development Service’ of the Northern Trust.

Sammy Wilson said:

“If further proof is needed that there are too many managers in the health service, this is it. They clearly have too much time on their hands and have got their priorities wrong if they think that what is needed are sessions such as these.

My Week 26th July 2010

Prime Minister’s questions last week was not the same without David Cameron, who had taken himself off to America to demean himself and the country as he sought to curry favour with the disastrous and unpopular President Obama. In his absence Nick Clegg showed why he is and will remain the junior partner in this coalition. There were cringes all around as he declared the war in Iraq illegal seemingly oblivious of the consequences which that carried for all the soldiers who took part in that action.

My Week – 19th July 2010

I didn’t count the number of MPs who spoke to me about what had happened back home this week, but I do know that from all points on the political spectrum, from right wing unionists supporting Tories to left wing republican supporting socialists, there was genuine concern and disappointment at the return of violence to our streets.

Wilson welcomes Ballycarry Post Office decision

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has welcomed the decision to reopen the Post Office at Ballycarry, albeit a hosted service on a limited basis.

Mr Wilson said:

“Ever since the post office closed I have received numerous letters and emails from constituents concerned that this vital service is no longer available. I have been campaigning for the post office to be re opened since it was closed and although I am pleased that there will be a service available it will be disappointing for many that it will not be a full time service, but instead open only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9.30am and 1.30pm. However this is of course better than no post office at all.
