“Wilson in call for free TV licences for pensioners”

Sammy Wilson MP has called for the government to provide free TV licences for all pensioners over the age of 65.

Mr Wilson signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons which urges the government to waive the licence fee for pensioners and end the disparity that exists between those living in their own homes and those living in nursing homes or sheltered accommodation.

Speaking from Westminster Mr Wilson said: “Pensioners are being hit hard – by the abolition of the 10p tax rate and by rising fuel and food costs and many struggle to make ends meet.

For many pensioners living on their own, televisions are highly important for information and entertainment, and free TV licences would help them immensely. Currently all pensioners over 75 are able to receive free TV licences, but I call on the government to reduce the age threshold to 65 so that all pensioners can benefit from the policy.
