“Wilson: Abortion debate demonstrated New Labour at its worst ”

Sammy Wilson MP MLA has expressed his disappointment at the results of two key votes in the Commons on Tuesday night.

Mr Wilson said it was highly regretful that the upper time limit for abortion was not reduced from 24 weeks and also that those seeking IVF treatment will no longer need to take into account the child’s need for a father.

Speaking from Westminster, Mr Wilson said: “These debates on Tuesday showed New Labour at its worst – anti family, anti Christian, politically correct, intolerant and condescending to anyone who would dare demand that public policy reflect Christian beliefs.

There were some excellent speeches made in the chamber, with compelling arguments made for keeping the ‘need for a father clause’ in existing legislation. I raised the point that it is hypocritical for the Government to say that it is important for fathers to be part of family life, while at the same time attempting to remove this ‘need for a father clause’.

The abortion vote means that at 23 weeks babies inside the womb will have no rights, but babies outside the womb born prematurely will have full rights. How is this right? How can this be justified?

The votes in the Commons demonstrate to us that Members of Parliament are hell bent on pursuing a secularisation agenda and love to laud it over those that disagree with them, as was witnessed at the end of the abortion vote on Tuesday night.

Unfortunately we have again seen, like with the vote on an EU referendum, that MP’s are willing to ignore common sense and the will of the people. Sadly, it is children that will suffer most because of Tuesday’s votes.”
