“Criminal Justice Order will give necessary powers to police”
Sammy Wilson MP has said that the police will now have the powers necessary to combat the anti social use of vehicles. The MP was speaking following discussion of Criminal Justice Order in Committee at Westminster. Mr Wilson was in discussion of the issue with police in Carrickfergus last week, and stated today that he was glad that the issue was being tackled by giving police the power to seize and destroy quads, scramblers and scooters being used illegally. Mr Wilson said: “This is an issue which affects many of many of my constituents. I have received compliments about the use of these vehicles in both Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey, and they also affect people across the province. The use of these machines is an annoyance and danger to other people, and parents should think before they buy them for their children. I would encourage councils to set up designated tracks so that people can enjoy them safely but unfortunately councils are reluctant to do this due to the fear that it will leave them open to ligation if anything does go wrong. Nevertheless, when the legislation comes into force in July the police will have the power to confiscate these vehicles where they are being used illegally, such as in woodland areas, parks and fields.”
